it’s only rock and roll…

…18th century style.  The images available oline do no justice at all to this portrait of the 10th Duke of Hamilton, painted some time around 1782.  Before I knew anything about the young man in the painting from reading up later on Alexander Douglas-Hamilton, I could feel not only the showiness but the stunning self-assuredness of his personality.  Posing for this portrait as a teenager, there is no doubting that he would become a famous person of his day… at least in his own mind.  The brush-work and vibrant colouring combined with the subtle understanding of the sitter’s character could mean that a portrait created in this period could only have been created by Sir Joshua Reynolds.
