…18th century style. The images available oline do no justice at all to this portrait of the 10th Duke of Hamilton, painted some time around 1782. Before I knew anything about the young man in the painting from reading up later on Alexander Douglas-Hamilton, I could feel not only the showiness but the stunning self-assuredness of his personality. Posing for this portrait as a teenager, there is no doubting that he would become a famous person of his day… at least in his own mind. The brush-work and vibrant colouring combined with the subtle understanding of the sitter’s character could mean that a portrait created in this period could only have been created by Sir Joshua Reynolds.
