Earlier even than than the portrait by Joshua Reynolds in the previous post, is this deceptively simple portrait by Jean-Baptiste Greuze.  The picture itself is just over a half-metre in height but Greuze manages to pack a huge amount of detail into this portrait, first exhibited in 1757.  This is another painting onshow at The National Gallery of Scotland but if you can’t travel to see it, here’s more about the picture.
